It’s a bit of a pickle isn’t it: the fact that almost as soon as we get our new puppies home, we need to start taking them places on leash…. but we also know that solid leash skills take time to develop! So what’s a handler to do when you have to get a puppy from A to B before that training even has a chance to get started?
This presentation covers how we can minimize the development of undesirable leash habits like pulling, lunging, and frustrated or over-excited on-leash reactions in our new puppies with a few strategic management choices for those times when we just have to get to where we are going.
Discover how your puppy’s individual personality determines the skills you’ll want to focus on first, how to teach the skills that are most needed- and the environments that will work best for their training. We’ll use context cues to help, rather than hinder, the calm and relaxed emotional state that is ideal for a nice walk.
Finally, we’ll discuss the concept of "ditching the destination” for daily walks, and about how this one simple idea can help to improve the enjoyment you both have on your daily walks right away and into the future.
