It’s important to teach our dogs how to chain in a thoughtful, systematic way. Once your dog knows the pieces of an exercise, they need to be combined into a chain. And before your dog is ready for the ring, they must be able to chain multiple exercises without food or toy rewards. When dogs don’t get a reinforcer in the ring, they think they are wrong which manifests as stress. Our goal is to teach them that not getting a reinforcer means they are correct. Don’t worry, just keep going, the reinforcer is coming! This creates dogs that are confident and resilient. Once they understand the concept, dogs actually become more excited as they move through the chain. In this workshop we will teach chaining in a step-by-step progression. You will learn how to handle chaining errors in a way that teaches your dog to push through and give you effort throughout the entire chain. We will explore both forward chaining and backchaining.
