Want to learn how to cast your gundog left, right and back? You've come to the right place!
This workshop shows you how to get started with 3HC - or three-handed casting.
We begin up close and on a small-scale, teaching the dog how our casts relate to the direction we want them to take. We will be teaching left casts; right casts; left-back; and right-back casts.
If your dog doesn't have a reliable retrieve yet - or if your dog isn't motivated to do more than a few retrieves in a row - you can still take this workshop... because we use target mats instead of retrieves: 'Baby 3HC' is a great way to start puppies off with casts before the retrieve is trained.
This workshop is suitable for any gundog breed which is expected to handle.
Prior training: Your dog should be able to target a mat or platform from 2-3 yards away. This doesn't need to be perfectly on cue - and the dog does not need to assume a position on the target. (Although a Sit is to be encouraged!) We just need the platform to have some 'pull' for the dog. (We won't be covering how to get started with basic platform targeting - as we have to get on with the other stuff!).
Equipment: You will need three platforms/placeboards. Ideally these are identical or very similar. (Cato boards are recommended, but any platform or placeboard is fine.) It is possible to use thick crate mats instead, but mats should not slide around when a fast dog targets them with enthusiasm!
