Course Details
Are you stuck in training a retrieve? Have you been working for ages on trying to get your dog to hold an item, trying to click just a quarter of a second more than the last rep?!
This workshop takes a different approach! We will discuss how to get your dog excited about picking up items from the ground and shoving them in your hand! Not just a toy retrieve (although this method is suitable for that too!), but a retrieve with all the criteria of not pouncing, rolling, or chewing the item.
Build up your dog's love for their dumbbell and get them MOVING as your first steps.
Laura has trained retrieves on hundreds of service dogs over the past 10 years. This method will not be using the standard back chaining approach of teaching a stationary hold first. Instead, we will look at teaching the “moving hold” where your dog learns to excitedly, but politely pick up an item from the ground and bring it directly to your hand. While this method is then suitable to add in a sit and hold in as a next step, the hold will not be discussed in this workshop.
We will discuss:
- Biting an item in your hand and on the floor
- Picking up the item from the ground
- Finding your hand and shoving it in
