Course Details
Have you ever heard the phrase, "Go back to Foundations?" Do you really know what that means? In this class we will learn WHAT the proper foundations are for Nosework and will work on enhancing them.
This class is for all dogs already searching on odor. Are you new to Nosework and want to make sure that your dog is rock solid? Or do you have a specific problem that needs to be addressed in your searching with your more advanced dog? Both can be addressed in this class.
Foundations are the bedrock upon which we build an excellent Nosework dog. It determines whether we will flounder or be mediocre or if we are able to allow the dog to fulfill his individual potential. Time spent on Foundations is never wasted. Foundations aren't "beginning stuff"... Foundations are a way of training so that we can develop a dog who can work fluidly and confidently. We can enhance the teamwork between the dog and handler.... and when teamwork is at its finest it's difficult to know where the dog ends and the handler begins!
This class helps us to:
- Understand what Foundations ARE and what Good Looks Like
- Helps us to target where to focus and improve
- Address training challenges.... most training issues are Foundation related!
What is the result of good Foundations? FOCUS, TEAMWORK, FLUIDITY, EXCELLENCE
Here's an example of a team showing excellent Foundations:
Teaching Approach
Each week a series of lectures will be released (usually 3 to 5). The lectures will be a combination of supporting theory and setup examples. Some self reflection will be needed in order to apply the concepts to the learner's situation. This is a class with a lot of foundational concepts that are actionable rather than step by step instructions.
This class will have a Teacher's Assistant (TA) available in the Facebook study group to help the bronze and silver students! Directions for joining that Facebook group will be in the classroom after you register.
Stacy Barnett is a top nosework competitor and trainer, with many Summit Level titles in the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW), (Judd SMTx3, Brava SMTx5, Powder SMTx3). She is also a Wilderness SAR K9 handler with her certified dog, K9 Prize. Stacy has been a faculty member at FDSA since 2015 (Click here for full bio and to view Stacy's upcoming courses)
Syllabus
This class will cover more concepts than teams can be expected to cover in 6 weeks. The intention is NOT that you will master all of your Foundations. Foundation training is a way of life in this sport and should be integrated into your everyday training for the full career of your dog. The only difference is the interpretation of the Foundational concept. FOUNDATIONS ARE NEVER "DONE".
This class will start with an overall description of Foundations. For newer teams, you can explore your current performance and determine your next steps. These next steps will guide you in your training over the full six weeks. For experienced teams, the first week serves as a diagnosis of the root of any challenge you might be having.
The following weeks will consist of focus areas for lecture material. As a team, you can pick and choose based on the assessment you did in Week 1 in order to make sure that the focus of your work is specific and relevent to YOUR DOG.

Prerequisites & Supplies
There are no titling Prerequisites for this class as long as your dog knows how to search (should be searching all elements)! Ideally you will fall into one of two categories:
(1) You are working a green dog... you might either be a new or an experienced handler
(2) You are working a more experienced dog but are running into issues... bring your problems! We can use Foundations to address and fix them.

What really ARE Nosework Foundations?
So often we throw around the word, “Foundations”. In fact, when you hear people give advice it usually sounds something like “Just go back to Foundations.” Often, the advice is well intended, but it lacks substance.
The issue is that the word “Foundations” is a Buzz Word.
What is a Buzz Word? Well, we all “know” what the term Buzz Word means (like we all “know” what the term Foundations mean…) but just to make sure that we are talking about the same thing, let’s level set.
From Mirriam-Webster:
Definition of buzzword
1: an important-sounding usually technical word or phrase often of little meaning used chiefly to impress laymen
2: a voguish word or phrase
The thing is that a Buzz Word is a phrase that lacks substance. It’s a phrase that gets kicked around with only cursory understanding of what it means. When we say “go back to Foundations”, the handler actually gets really very real information and absolutely nothing that is actionable.
It’s true though! Foundations ARE usually the answer. In fact there are very few challenges that I’ve seen that can’t be fixed by application of Foundational Training. However, even that information is useless unless we can say WHAT Foundations really are.
Nosework Foundations create the basis for building skills. Sure, it includes basic skills, but it also includes the emotional aspect of developing a Nosework dog. At the core, the most basic quality that contributes to a successful team is MOOD and all of the emotional aspects that go along with it. Mood and emotions are like the bottom layer of a large and elaborate wedding cake. At the very top of the cake, where you might see figurines of the happy couple, is a finely tuned, engaged, focused searching dog that is unstoppable and can search anywhere and everywhere with absolute confidence and laser focused purpose, even in the most challenging environments and under extreme time pressure. How we get there is reflected in the many supporting layers that paint and carve a picture of the dog’s developmental journey.
Without experience from previous dogs or an innate and finely tuned crystal ball, the handler is left guessing about how to guide their dog and support them in the journey. When we use Buzz Words to communicate, we can actually block understanding because we remove all power from our words.
Language is critical in developing our understanding of a body of knowledge. So to get our dogs off in the right direction, we need to make sure that we understand WHAT the Foundations of Nosework are.
But before we can talk about Foundational SKILLS, we need to first talk about the essential elements that are critical in making or breaking a Nosework Team.
At the core is MOOD and EMOTION. This is where we establish the dog’s receptivity to searching and training. When you are happy, so is your dog! A happy and joyful dog is set up for success in searching. In fact, just SMILING can improve your chances of a good search!
CONFIDENCE is all about making sure that your dog is comfortable with his surroundings and adequately acclimated. Equally important is your dog’s Self Confidence in his own capability and his confidence in YOU based on your training history.
OPTIMAL AROUSAL allows the dog to focus and work effectively. This can mean the difference between Ho-Hum-Yawn and WOW! This also means that any anxiety that the dog may be feeling has been relieved.
FOCUS means that the dog is intent on ONLY searching and ONLY on target odor. Building on more core capabilities, the dog learns to not focus on either the handler or the environment, but rather ONLY on the search!
FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS are what we usually think of when we think about Foundations. Does the dog understand Source? Does the dog know how to recognize and follow target odor?
According to the way I teach, these are the important Foundational Skills:
Why is this important?
The rubber meets the road when we start to problem solve for issues that crop up in our training. Without a roadmap, we tend to focus on addressing the pain that we are feeling rather than understanding what is driving the pain to begin with.
We focus on the PAIN rather than using the SYMPTOMS to identify CAUSE. The Pain is what we can see and feel. The Cause may be something else entirely and is usually related to some sort of Foundation. The roots of the problem is the Cause, but what we see and feel are the Symptoms.
What this means is that we need to know WHAT are the Foundations and WHEN to focus on them. And THAT is how we craft a top Nosework Dog.

A sampling of what prior students have said about this course ...
I LOVED this course! I got SO much out of it! I learned a ton about reading my dog, how to use foundations to create a learning history of success and confidence and so much more. My dog and I grew a ton as a team in this course. Stacy's lectures were excellent, but just as great was the TA, Ana. I got so much great feedback and encouragement. I recommended this course to everyone in my nosework class, I hope it is offered again in the future! Every nosework team should take this course, regardless of skill level!
Thank you Stacy!! What a fantastic 6 week class! Stacy has a genuine desire to see her students be successful!! Her feedback on videos was always constructive and helpful and encouraging.
This was the first time I have taken a course with Stacy and I am sure it won’t be the last. Stacy changed the way I look at scent work and her approach has made my entire nosework working relationship with my dog so much better. I learned so much about reading my dog that I never knew before. My handling skills are a constant work in progress, but Stacy’s lectures and feedback have helped with that as well, and although it will take me a lot longer to break old habits, I now have a feel sense of what good handling should look like. I have taken many Fenzi classes over the years and this one rates right on the top. Thanks Stacy :) Kim and Eddie
Stacy always presents new information that she has updated or found to be important with her vast experience and current involvement with nosework. She is enthusiastic about this sport and clearly wants all her students to be successful and to enjoy the teamwork of nosework with their dogs.
I was only bronze but I learned a lot from the gold students and your feedback Stacy! You have great insight to what the dogs and handlers are doing and how to address any problems. Very well done class.
Not only that this class helped me understand what "Foundations" really are, but it also helped me to understand my dog even better, to make progress in many ways (training NW, relationship with my dog, my own mental state) and to have even more fun with NW! Thank you so much, Stacy, for your brilliant lectures and all your efforts! Although I live in Austria and we don't have NW trials here, I LOVE this sport because it's so fascinating and so helpful and both my dog and I are learning so many useful things! Looking forward to more NW adventures with you next term!
